Jyoti’s story - Morrisons & Marie Curie
Jyoti was 16 when she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. After receiving a terminal diagnosis in 2016, she’s been receiving hospice care at home from the Marie Curie Hospice, West Midlands.
Jyoti had a pretty normal life growing up. She was a “happy, larger-than-life teenager”, collecting key rings and stamps. But at age 16, she was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder (MCTD) – a combination of autoimmune disorders. As a result of her MTCD, she developed pulmonary fibrosis. “Unfortunately, there’s no cure apart from a double lung transplant – which I was rejected for in 2016.”
“Before Marie Curie, I was lost. I was scared and wondering, how is this going to end now? But now I have my Marie Curie Nurse, Jenna, who comes out to me and does check-ups. She helps me with pain management, asks me how I’ve been, if there’s anything I need. Jenna also supports my husband and my mom.”
“What people don’t seem to understand about hospice care is it’s not just end of life – it’s how those with life-limiting conditions have some form of life. By giving me that encouragement that I can still live knowing that I’ll be supported to the end. I think that, for me, is how Marie Curie has helped.”
With Morrisons’ help, Marie Curie will be there for more people like Jyoti and her family, bringing hospice care at home to them, in their community, so they can stay surrounded by the people and things they love.
